A rare evening of improvisation bringing together four exceptional musicians and the rich musical traditions of Iran.
Four remarkable Iranian musicians come together for an evening of improvisation and musical dialogue, closing out this year’s Experimental Link Series.
The concert unfolds in two parts. The first features an intimate improvised performance by Hossein Behroozinia, a renowned master of the barbat, and setar player Mehdi Rostami, exploring the depth and spontaneity of Persian classical music. In the second half, they are joined by Pooyan Ranaei on Kurdish tanbur and Bamdad Fotouhi on tombak for a quartet performance.
At the heart of the evening is an encounter between different musical traditions of Iran: the Persian classical tradition of the radif meets the maqam-based music of the Kurdish tanbur, with the musicians using improvisation to find new connections between them.
The concert will be professionally recorded for a future release, capturing this one-night collaboration as it unfolds.
